The Personal Orchestra, or Audio Data Compression by 10, 000: 1

چکیده
Virtually all of western classical music could be recorded and stored on a singls computer disk and rendered on a music system costing as much as a good piano. To demonstrate and explore this, I built a system for audio and musical research which permits a workstation to control 64 synthesizers and a computerized Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand piano. It is easy to assemble and play complex scores on the piano accompanied by a synthetic orchestra. Examples here include a fully orchestrated ultravirtuoso arrangement of FranzLiszt's "third" piano concerto, the Totentanz. Therc are also families of analytical programs that parse musical data to identify key, melodies, and other interesting features. Since a performer generates about 3 kilobytes per mínute of gestural data, the volume of recorded information is small: Moby Díckuses more space than all of Scott Joplin's piano music; Bach's is 6 megab¡es. Consequently, even elementary processing provides great leverage over such concentrated information. This will open ne\il avenues for entertainment media, while retaining a grand orchestral, yet personal, perspective. @ Computing Systems, Yol. 3 . No. 2 . Personal Orchestra: Conducting Audio/Video Music Recordings
Personal Orchestra lets anybody conduct an electronic orchestra at a new level of realism: users interact not with a synthetic, but an original audio and video recording of a real orchestra—the Vienna Philharmonic. Nevertheless, they can interactively control not only volume and instrumentation, but also tempo of the orchestra, using natural conducting gestures. A gesture-tracking and -predicti...
متن کاملSAOL: The MPEG-4 Structured Audio Orchestra Language
The MPEG-4 standard, which will be published in October 1998, contains extensive provisions for sound synthesis as well as traditional methods of audio compression. At the heart of MPEG-4 Structured Audio, the sound-synthesis framework, is a new music-synthesis language called SAOL. This language, based on the Music-N model, is specified and defined fully in the MPEG-4 International Standard; a...
متن کاملA Virtual Dsp Architecture for Mpeg-4 Structured Audio
The MPEG-4 Audio standard provides a toolset for synthetic Audio generation and Audio processing called Structured Audio (SA). SA permits to describe algorithms through its Structured Audio Orchestra Language (SAOL) programming language. Unlike some other languages of the same type, SAOL has a sample-by-sample execution structure, and this makes particularly important the overhead computation i...
متن کاملThe Bank of Swedish
The Bank of Swedish is described: affiliation, organisation, linguistic resources and tools. A point is made of the close connection between lexical research and corpus data, the broad textual coverage from Modern Swedish to Old Swedish, the official status of the organisation and its connection to Göteborg University. The relation to the broader scope of the comprehensive Language Database of ...
